COMPASS Test Fund for Needy NWACC Applicants

Lynn Reed and Gerritt Den Herder, of the Wealth Gap Project have spearheaded a COMPASS Test scholarship fund.

Please see attached letter from Ms. Reed who is an honors student and the honors program work study.

If you would like to help with this fund, either take or send a check to the NWACC Foundation made out to Career Pathways–COMPASS Fund. For more information, contact Chris Huggard, 479-619-4270 or chuggard@nwacc.edu.

CHANGES IN NWACC NURSING PROGRAM SELECTION CRITERIA: Students applying for admittance to Spring 2016 (October 1, 2015-November 1, 2015 application) or later need to be aware of major changes in the selection criteria.

The selection criteria will be as follows:

  • Applicants will accrue points based on the number of required general education courses completed; course grades, and the HESI score. In the required science courses (A&P I&II, and Microbiology), A = 4 pts. B = 3 pts. C = 2 pts. In all other required courses, A = 3 pts. B = 2 pts. C = 1 pt. The required science courses (A&P I&II, and Microbiology) that are taken at NWACC will each receive 1 additional preference point. One additional preference point will also be given if the student takes College Algebra or higher for the Math requirement. The course can be taken at NWACC or can be transfer credit.
  • Beginning with admittance to spring 2016 (October 1, 2015- November 1, 2015 application), if a student has taken a course required for the Nursing program twice, the highest grade will be used and points will be awarded accordingly.
  • If the student has taken a course required for the Nursing program more than two times, the grades will be averaged and points awarded based on the average grade. Then as of admittance Summer/Fall 2016 (February 1, 2016-March 1, 2016 application), only the first two attempts of the required courses needed for the Nursing program will be considered and the highest grade will be used to award points. Service Learning Opportunity to Mentor

Elmdale Elementary School in Springdale is seeking mentors for their students. Principal Michele Hutton describes the mentor program as such: We want mentors to come at lunch time and eat lunch with a small group or with individual students, one on one. It’s to provide a caring adult in their lives. We welcome mentors who will listen to them and encourage them. We want the mentors to tell them about college and the importance of getting an education. However, we have planned for the mentoring to be done in a relaxed environment. A couple of our mentors bring UNO cards, they play and talk. We really just want our kids to have someone who cares about them because they often don’t get that kind of caring attention at home.

Lunchtime Schedule: 3rd graders 11:30am-Noon; 4th graders, 12:05-12:35pm; 5th graders 12:15-12:45pm. To learn about participating in this program, contact Stephanie Hinsey, shinsey@sdale.org or 479-750-8859.

Coming Out From the Shadows Event

Please join the DREAMers Club of NWACC on April 7 as we observe Coming Out From the Shadows Day.

This will be an opportunity for NWACC students, staff, and faculty to learn some facts about immigration and about the situation of students who are undocumented. It is also a chance for our college community who support undocumented students to demonstrate that support publicly through written messages and photos.

Perhaps most important is the opportunity for students who have not revealed their undocumented status to come forward without fear so they can enjoy the warm embrace of their peers and allies and become a part of the community working on a fair and equitable solution to their status.

The DREAMers will also be selling club t-shirts for $10.00. All proceeds will go directly to the scholarship fund for undocumented students.

If you already have a DREAMers of NWACC t-shirt, please wear it tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7 to show support for our undocumented students.  The DREAMers will also continue their photo campaign, so if you would like to participate, please stop by the table for more information.

We will be on Bogle Plaza from 10:00-2:00. In the event of bad weather, we will move to the Becky Paneitz Student Center Lobby.

The speakers and the workshop leaders come from well-known companies and organizations in Northwest Arkansas, and they are eager to share some of the things they have learned with young people who are just starting out on their careers and with older students who are exploring new options. Mike Harvey, Chief Operating Officer of the Northwest Arkansas Council, will the luncheon keynote speaker, following a morning panel of leaders from major companies and organizations who will share stories about their own journeys to success. Breakout sessions will lead students to understand themselves and their options. The activities will culminate in career exploration in the afternoon. Coming Out From the Shadows Event (NEW)

We will be on Bogle Plaza from 10:00-2:00. In the event of bad weather, we will move to the Becky Paneitz Student Center Lobby.

APRIL IS NATIONAL SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH (NEW)

The NWACC Red Flag Campaign will be providing many educational opportunities throughout the month and we hope you will join us in raising awareness and preventing sexual violence and rape.

For more information on resources and services both on and off campus, visit our website at: https://www.nwacc.edu/web/conduct/redflag and https://www.nwacc.edu/web/wellness/index. Stay tuned for more information to be posted in the coming days with events, educational opportunities and so much more!

The Red Flag Campaign is a Bystander Intervention program designed to connect the NWACC Community through education and empowerment. We want to create awareness and provide outreach for issues surrounding domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual assault. We want to have a community where everyone is encouraged to speak up and speak out against violence and harassment. Students are encouraged to self-report by going through to our Department of Public Safety, the Director of Student Support and/or the Dean of Students Office. Employees are encouraged to report to our Department of Public Safety and/or Human Resources. SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING If you see a red flag in your friend or coworkers relationship, SAY SOMETHING!

NWACC Theatre students performing in the play, Genny Olson, and Ashley Edwards, will be attending the festival for the performance. As part of the festival, NWACC students will be able to participate in all festival events including professional development workshops, theatre productions, competitions, and networking with other colleges and university Theatre programs during the week of the regional festival.

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) is a national organization that exists to celebrate the educational and creative process of university and college theatre. KCACTF promotes professional standards and provides students and faculty with opportunities to bridge the academic and professional worlds. KCACTF honors achievements in diversity and excellence and encourages experiences in all areas of theatre. The John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Play recognizes one or more outstanding scripts each year for presentation at the national festival at the Kennedy Center.

The recipient of the award will receive: $500 provided by the Kennedy Center, a professional development fellowship to the National festival in April, and a Dramatists Guild award that provides the playwright with an Active membership in the Guild. As a regional finalist, Olson will be both honored at the Regional festival, and have the opportunity to advance forward to the national festival in Washington, D.C in April.

There will be a public performance at NWACC prior to the festival on February 19 at 7 p.m. in White Auditorium. Donations will be accepted to help fund the students travel to the regional festival.
