Bike at NWACC

The NWACC Student Ambassador and Government Association along with NWACC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa are excited to announce the launch of Bike at NWACC. This is a free, shared bicycle program available to NWACC students and employees. For more information watch the video above. Veterans Resource Center to Present Congressman with Challenge Coin

On Wednesday, October 17th, NWACC officials representing the college’s Veterans Resource Center will present Congressman Steve Womack with a Challenge Coin at 1:30 p.m. in the Paneitz Student Center on the north side of the second floor landing.

The NWACC Challenge Coin is newly minted and will be presented to service veterans who graduate from the college beginning in May 2019. One side of the coin bears the words sacrifice, integrity, honor and success. The other side presents the logos of five branches of service: Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.

Mad Scientist Laboratory Escape Room (NEW)

On Monday, October 22nd, sign up to see if you can escape the Mad Scientist Laboratory created by the Geek Alliance! Enjoy finding the answers and deciphering puzzles before your time runs out!

The Mad Scientist Laboratory will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Student Center Room 108 and costs only $6 per person or $20 for a group of four. Reserve your time in advance by emailing Allen Benson, abenson5@nwacc.edu or stop by an iGive table.

Rape Culture and Potential Solutions (NEW)

NWACC’s Red Flag Campaign is sponsoring a presentation on the myths, realities, and potential solutions for Rape Culture. Anne Shelley, Executive Director of the NWA Center for Sexual Assault will speaking in Student Center 108 on Monday, October 29, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

2018-19 Fall/Nursing NWACC Scholarship Cycle (NEW)

The 2018-19 Fall/Nursing NWACC Scholarship Cycle is now open! Deadline to apply is October 17, 2018. In addition to the nursing scholarships, there is a scholarship available to ALL STUDENTS, not just nursing students.

Child Abuse Response Trainings (NEW)

Melanie Halbrook, Education Specialist and Forensic Interviewer for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County, will be leading a presentation called Your FIRST Response to Alleged Child Maltreatment on Monday, October 22nd from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in NCPT 1037. This presentaion covers the signs and symptoms of child abuse and the roles and responsibilities of a mandated reporter. This training is offered free of charge.

The Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County will hold another training titled From Trauma to Resilience on Tuesday, November 6th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in NCPT 1010. Studies have shown that adverse childhood experiences and traumatic events can have a lasting, negative impact on a person’s health and well-being. This training is designed to help you develop the unique skillset needed to support individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and traumatic events. This training is also offered free of charge.

Congratulations We Can Box It Winners (NEW)

Thank you to all who participated in NWACC Food Pantry’s We Can Box It competition. First place went to the English Department for their sculpture of the Becky Paneitz Student Center. Second place went to the Student Association for Respiratory Studies (SARS). The food used to create all sculptures in the competition will help keep the Food Pantry stocked for the coming year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. NWACC will be honoring all victims and survivors with a series of planned events and speakers.

In honor of the 51 Arkansans who were killed in domestic violence incidents during 2017, we will be displaying their names and stories on a “pledge wall” in the Student Center Foyer.

The “Pledge Wall” is located in the Student Center lobby and will remain throughout the month of October. We invite all members of our NWACC community to take a pledge to stand up against domestic violence. We will be hosting table tops and taking pledges on Tuesday, October 2nd and Wednesday, October 10th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If you can’t join us during that time, you may take the pledge on-line and post a “selfie” or picture of your pledge form with hashtag #nwaccitmatters to social media.

NWACC Red Flag Campaign

You may notice “red flags” displayed in various locations on campus. This is part of the Red Flag Campaign. This Bystander Intervention campaign is designed to provide education and outreach to students, faculty, and staff in the areas of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault. Our message is simple: SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.  This message is about speaking up for those who do not have a voice, intervening by asking someone if something is wrong or if they need help, and educating our campus on the resources we have for reporting and receiving help. We want to create awareness and provide outreach for issues surrounding domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual assault.

If you are in an abusive relationship, or feel that you are a victim of stalking on our college campus, please contact the Dean of Students office 479-619-4234, the Director of Student Conduct 479-619-4315, or the Department of Public Safety 479-619-4229.  You can also email us at redflag@nwacc.edu.  We have free counseling services available on campus for students; email counseling@nwacc.edu to arrange a confidential counseling appointment.

Math Center Schedule

The tutoring hours for the Math Center have been changed. Consult this document for the updates.  The Math Center (SC 344A) is available to help students in math courses from Pre-Algebra to Calculus I. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for assistance in math.

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith College of Applied Science and Technology will be on campus in the Student Center Lobby on Tuesday, October 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to visit with students interested in transferring into one of their degree programs. SAGA Presents: VOTE 2018 — Meet the Candidates (UPDATED)

It’s voting season! The NWACC Student Ambassador and Government Association (SAGA) has been working with all Benton and Washington County state representative candidates to bring them on campus for one-hour information sessions to speak with  students and employees.

Our last candidate to visit NWACC:

  • Chris Birch (D) District 92 has scheduled for October 17th at 9:00 am in SC 108

NOTE: SAGA reached out to state representatives only. SAGA will be attending the General Assembly in January and wanted to make these connections prior to that. SAGA has reached out to all candidates for those offices in Benton and Washington Counties.

22nd Annual NWACC Blood Drive

Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will be in Student Center Rooms 108A and 108B Thursday, October 11th, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sign up on the registration board outside the office of 1418 in Burns Hall. Remember to eat well and drink plenty of fluids prior to giving blood. Please bring a photo ID as well. Each donor will receive a free T-shirt.

The Blood Drive is sponsored by the NWACC Health, Physical Education, Fitness Center and Sports Club Department.

Money in American Politics: Film Screening & Facilitated Discussion

Join us for a screening of the 2018 documentary Charlie vs. Goliath and a facilitated discussion on money in American politics on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. in Peterson Auditorium. This event is sponsored by the NWACC Library, the NWACC Honors Program, the NWACC Department of Social Sciences, the NWACC Student Ambassador and Government Association, and the Omni Center.

Study Abroad Applications Open

NWACC Study Abroad has trips to Germany, Greece, and Italy for Summer 2019. All NWACC students and community members may apply. Applications close on February 15th, 2019. Any questions may be directed to StudyAbroad@nwacc.edu.

NWACC Food Pantry Distribution Dates

NWACC’s Food Pantry provides help to NWACC students, faculty and staff throughout the year. Food will be distributed on every other Wednesday and Thursday. A three-day supply of food is given.

Applications for assistance can be picked up at the Student Information Center in the Becky Paneitz Student Center or at the Office of Student Life in room 225 H in the Becky Paneitz Student Center. All persons requesting assistance must have an initial application on file. They will then be required to complete a distribution request form each time they request assistance. Distribution Request forms must be turned in at the Office of Student Life or the Student Information Center no later than 3:30 pm on the Monday before distribution.

Please consult this document for distribution dates and guidelines. In emergency cases, food may be distributed outside of normal distribution times. Please contact Becky Hudson, Director of Student Life at rhudson1@nwacc.edu or 479-986-6682 for more information about the Pantry.

HEALTH PROFESSIONS

Nursing Information Sessions Requirement

The NWACC Nursing program will be requiring all applicants to have attended a Pre-Nursing Information Session within one year prior to applying to the program beginning with the Track I application taken spring 2019 for fall 2019 admittance.

Students who have not attended a session within the designated time will not be eligible for the Nursing program. Students must have on record that they have attended a session by the deadline of the application period they are applying to.

Did You Know? Personal Counseling Is Free to Students

NWACC offers personal and career counseling to students through our new Counseling & Wellness Center.

Counseling is free for students and available on the main campus Monday-Friday. To schedule an appointment, contact counseling@nwacc.edu, (479) 619-4128 or visit us on the 2nd Floor of the Becky Paneitz Student Center.
